I don't know about the specific adapter, but in general documentation 
tells you to install the driver first so windows doesn't initially 
install its own driver, to later be replaced with the better-matching 
driver shipped on the CD. I suppose this helps assuring system stability.

Probably the only way to find out if it will work on ubuntu is to just 
hook up the card and see what happens - the chance on catastrophic 
systems failure is (should be) negligible.

Alternatively, googling for the name of the device and 'linux' should 
give some insight in other users' experience in getting the device to work.
