Try doing the installations through the Synaptic Package Manager. In
Gnome, System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager. I had a
system that did the same, and I think this works. 

You may also have to update the repositories list, if the programs
are in Universe or Multiverse. You can do that in Synaptic, also. After
starting it, go to Settings -> Repositories. Check all of them, then
hit the reload button in the upper right corner. That should also let
you use Add/Remove again.

You can use search to find the program by entering the name without
capital letters.
