I never suspected you were.  My point was that if a disk is damaged to the
point that you can't boot off it, it is often still quite readable when
mounted as an external drive on another system, and so "dd" seemed quite
likely to be overkill.  otoh, from later posts by you, I'd say the drive's
in worse shape than that - ddrescue seems like about the only chance.
