keyboard malfunction?

This is the alphabet according to my keyboard while running any
applications. abcdefgh515306n6*qrst4vwxyz

I've eliminated hardware problem, because the keyboard operates
correctly in my dual boot Vista OS.
Although my login information user name and password contain some of
those 'bad' keys, I'm able to log in fine.
I've tried to correct by running 'fix broken installation" from the
install disc.  I've tried using different kernels and in different
modes.

I'm out of options that I can think of.  I've searched the web and
forums for clues as to what could even cause this, never mind solve
the problem.

I'm open to anything and everything just short of a full clean
installation that would wipe out my data.  I should mention this is an
8.04 version installed on a Gateway MT6451.

Any and all help, suggestions or sympathy appreciated.  As always
