The gui, and recommended way to to your System -> Administration menu,
select "Services" and remove the check mark next to GDM graphical login.

There's also a command line utility to manipulate runlevel services, but
I forget what it is.  The reckless brute force method is to simply
delete  S30gdm from your /etc/rc2.d directory (your system might have a
different number than 30)
