As noted, I had already consulted the FAQ before writing to the List.
Setting up Ubuntu already occupies too large a part of my daily routine,
so I wanted to avoid getting involved in more lists or forums. I had
already run into a brick wall when trying to change the way the date is
expressed in Thunderbird and elsewhere. Now I'm having the same trouble
with the hours. It really does defy reason that defining two such simple
and universal functions requires hours and hour of fruitless research.

1. Is it really true that the only way to define the date expression is
to change the keyboard? Is there no one in the Ubuntu family who knows
how to make this change in a more reasonable way?

2. Is there no one in the Ubuntu family who knows how to make Sunbird
express the hours according to the 24 hour clock? I just took a closer
look at Thunderbird, and it too shows AM and PM. I hadn't noticed before
because it was beyond the right end of the window.

I am trying so hard to make this thing work, but the system fights me
every bit of the way. Tell me now if it's beyond hope, because I can't
endure this much longer. That's no joke. I'm not playing games. I want
it to work.
