Newbie---- setting up ubuntu in inter core 2 duo processor

Ubuntu 8.04 i386 CD/DVD should work with your specs, have you checked the
md5sum?
I run the i386 version on a Centrino Core 2 Duo Dell Laptop.

Perhaps it's just a write error in the CD...Have you tested using the
Alternate CD?  most of the times this should work if the Desktop CD doesn't
boot at all or even gets your Laptop/PC hanged.

If everything fails try using both of the AMD64 CD versions, Desktop and
Alternate.
