You're right, that does actually come very close to what I want, in
addition when I click on an image it pops up in "Eye of Gnome" which
gives me a viewer for the images.
There are two significant issues though:-
The tree view for navigating through the folders *doesn't* get
sorted the same way as the browser page. So, even if I have
manually ordered the images in the browser the tree view remains
in alphabetic order.
Arranging the icons manually is painful as it's *totally* manual,
i.e. the icons don't move into a regular grid when you move one,
you end up with a higgledy piggledy mess with icons on top of each
other, I can't see a way to arrange them tidily in a new (manual) order.
My preferred file manager (thunar) also does a fair job, I'll have a
further play with file managers, thanks for the idea.
