Newbie---- setting up ubuntu in inter core 2 duo processor

I am looking for help setting up ubuntu in my intel core 2 duo centrino laptop (2GHz).
I tried downloading the x86 desktop image and it did not work... (pc hangs when trying to boot).
Should I try downloading AMD 64bit CD image?
