Did both. First didn't do anything except make
xserver-xorg upgradeable again.  I'm sure the second
one is now correct for my system but still no joy. 
Can switch from X(tty7) to any other(tty1-6 or tty8)
but once on a selected tty can't got to any other
using cntl-alt-Fx.

Read that but no help.
Open to any other suggestions.  Is this a time where I
should do a reinstall? Tee, Hee!
