Hell no, that's hardly true. Otherwise I wouldn't be asking questions on
this list.
The fact is that there are some approaches to the problem that are
productive, and there are those that will bitch and moan despite
approaching the whole thing wrongheadedly, and *encouraging* particular
behaviors that are wrongheaded will NOT help people unless it's the help
yourself by making others dependent on you. Or you're trying to help
them screw up the computer for your own amusement. I'd prefer that
people don't automatically bitch about how screwed up Linux is when it
was something they did to themselves (for better or worse, that is more
often than not the case when I run into this sort of issue...just
acknowledge and move on.)

If you're installing TrueType fonts, a quick google for "ubuntu truetype
fonts" turned up results like
"http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2005/09/09/installing-microsoft-fonts/"
that may be of help.
