Well I carefully tested it on my system and it works as expected - the 
script runs as root, doesn't require a password and successfully carries 
out the command.

The OP wanted a way to run a script without prompting for a password and 
AFAICS my solution successfully achieves this.

The 'root' user still exists on Ubuntu even if you can't log in using it.
