Videos crashing 10 seconds in

I'm having some video issues with ubuntu 7.10 that I didn't have up
until today. Regardless of the video player I use (vlc, Gnome Movie
Player, gxine), about 10 seconds into any video the player screen goes
blue then just hangs. 
That being said, Mplayer from the CLI and from right clicking in
Nautilus will play the video just fine. Any one run into this or can
tell me how to figure out what is causing this?
