Delete her .gconf directorie(s) in her home directory and log in. gnome
reset every thing. She will lose her previous gnome setting though.

Has your daughter tried running the Gnome equivalent of 
kappfinder?
I think both kde and gnome store the users menu in the users home 
directory.  Could your daughter's have the wrong permissions?
