Ubuntu 7.10 Wireless and IBM Thinkpad X40

I have an IBM Thinkpad X40 with Ubuntu 7.10 installed that refuses to
activate it's wireless card. It is a dual boot machine (for now) that
confirms that the card itself is functional. When I set up the wireless
card as either roaming or targeting a known SSID, I do not see the
wireless LED light or flicker. ifconfig shows that the ath0 device is
present but inactive. Anyone have any thoughts on what else I might
check?
