I ran into the same problem with my web cam. I don't remember all the
details, but there are two culprits you might look into.
1) The version of the Video For Linux that your camera (or driver)
supports. In my case only version two was supported.
2) Does your driver support mmap'ing the video memory? If it doesn't you
may not be able to use some devices.
To eliminate 1) above and possibly 2) you might want to try the program,
videoview. It isn't free software, but it does handle the later version
of V4L and also doesn't require the mmap call. It worked for me.
You'll have to find it online yourself. If you have difficulty drop me a
