I fear sound preview in Nautilus never quite worked in the first place,
see this bug report I filed.... 3 full years ago, soon after
Ubuntu was born ! ;-/

In short, it never worked because Nautilus relied on some third party
playback library of some sort, that would allow it to play some audio
formats. The only proper fix is for Nautilus to use Gstreamer, which is
Gnome's multimedia framework. That would make things clean/consistent
and predictable. As far as I understood, this change was on the "todo"
list of the Nautilus team, but clearly enough, it is not yet implemented
despite all that time.
