Install issue ... opinion?

Hi All ...
I have an issue coming arising when I try installing Ubuntu Gutsy on one
particular PC. On loading the normal Live CD, I get the initial menu up; I
press return, than it goes of for about 30 seconds and eventually comes up
with the following message:
*********************************************************************************
udevd-event [2190]: run_program: '/sbin/modprobe' abmormal exit
BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5ubuntu7) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands
(initramfs)
*********************************************************************************
Can someone please confirm for me what the system is telling me here ...?
Not having kept notes in the past, I'm sure I've seen this before, and my
quick investigations at the time led me to change the CD drive which fixed
the issue on the PC I was working on; not this one. On this particular PC,
I can't do that as I don't have a spare CD to swap it with because it's a
specialised unit that's close in appearance to a laptop plug-in CD drive.
If it's likely to be the CD drive that's at fault, then I'd make an effort
to source a proper replacement. Initially, however, I'm just looking for
the opinion of those that will have much more of a clue than I do.
Currently, this PC runs Win2k which was originally installed using this CD,
so I know it has been a good unit in the past.
Cheers ... Tom.
