Cannot copy a link to an external device?

Thanks for your help. This doesn't quite seem to work. If I just archive a symlink then it seems to add both the file or folder being linked to and the symlink to the archive. Then when I try to extract the archive file-roller gives errors: "Cannot open: Not a directory". If I make sure to archive both the original files and the symlinks in one .tar.gz then it extracts without error, but when I try to follow the link nautilus says the link is broken.

Maybe I'm not following your instructions correctly?
