Did you check the packages.ubuntu.com link?  It lists the dependencies
and shows this utility uses Imagemagick for the manipulation.  I bet
with a little research you could find out all you need to know to edit
the scripts which make it all happen and ensure your quality is maintained.

Imagemagick is quite a good image manipulation program afaik.
