Keyboard activation

In attempting to install Ubuntu I stall on the page asking for my name, etc., because the keyboard does not produce the letters (indeed ANY letters) and I can find no way of activating the keyboard so that I may proceed to other pages where typed responses are equally essential.
I will appreciate very much the keyboard activation steps I should take in order to get on with the installation of Ubuntu.  I am replacing Windows Vista completely.
