You're exactly right!  Now that you've said it, I see that is when it 
happens.  I leave the PC running all the time but turn the monitor off 
at night or when I'm out.  This morning, there was a short power cut, 
hence the problem.

Thanks for pointing that out.  I'm glad I know the reason now.  I guess 
I could fix it by overriding the monitor EDID in the xorg.conf if it 
bothers me enough...
