gutsy/amd64: icedtea-java7-plugin?

Folks;
playing around with gutsy/amd64, I wonder whether anyone so far has
managed to get any Java5 based applet to work with native (64bit)
Firefox 2.x/3.x browser? So far, I installed the icedtea-java7-plugin
package which seemed promising but failed even reaching for the
java.com test site:

I know this is rather "obscure", however does anyone have any hints
