It's a possibility but that lacks the convenience of the notes being available any time, from any computer. And it requires me to handle the web server and backup. I don't want her to be dependent on me to fix things that might go wrong or to make sure the notes are safely backed up. So the ideal thing seems to be a web server on the Internet with a password required at some level (apache or above) before getting to the notes themselves.
After some research I think what I'm looking for is a good personal wiki hosting service, preferably one using free software.
'Personal wiki' seems to usually refer to something online that is not for public viewing, that you have to login to see. Whereas 'personal blog' would just mean a normal, public blog. But a blog that you had to login to see would pretty much serve the same purpose as a wiki I think. The added flexibility of a wiki is not really needed, and the inherent chronology of a blog might actually be a good thing (it structures itself chronologically, whereas a wiki needs you to structure it, although I suppose a good one could provide a chronological view for you).
