Thank you for your reply! 

I would probably have sworn on the proverbial stack of bibles that I *had*
earlier tried your suggestion, or a version of it, at least. But of course, when
I (re-)tried the command, there, there on the screen! a long listing appeared
and suggested some form of serious memory loss had occurred. 

Thanks to your help which did narrow down the field of search for me.
