Yes, it would indeed be nice. However, I suspect it is traditional
Unix server thinking; it's a background app, so install it with its
admin tools, run it in its own account, manage it through the separate
GUI app.

If you download and install BOINC the low-tech way, by unzipping the
tarball in your home directory, then you get the monitor app as well.
I have added GNOME's "run button" to my toolbar & that's how I launch
the BOINC manager; I press the cog-wheel icon, press the down arrow
once and usually

~/BOINC/run_manager &

... is is the last-entered command, so I just hit Enter.
