I realise this isn't very helpful, but after looking at the way that
Ubuntu installs BOINC as a daemon - what Windows would call a
"service", an always-running background app with no UI - I removed it
again, downloaded BOINC from setiathome.berkeley.edu and installed it
manually in my own home directory. This way, it runs when *I* want it
to run, and when I want the resources for other things, I can just
stop it. I find this a lot more convenient and I suggest that you
might, too.
