dist-upgrade gutsy to hardy can't boot

I did apt-get dist-upgrade from gutsy to hardy. It installed generic and 386
kernels to match the existing kernels, but generated initrds incapable of
mounting the root filesystem that lives on sda12. Both new initramfs have
neither /dev/disk nor /dev/sd*. I can still boot a Gutsy 2.6.22-14 kernel,
but how do I get the initrds to build correctly for the Hardy kernels, or
find out what went wrong when dist-upgrade built them?
