I tried virtualbox-ose last year and it sucked.  Same sort of problem as you
have.  I tried again last month, and now I'm using it all the time.  I
originally installed the ose version, then needed to have access to USB
devices so installed the non-free version, and it's flawless.  I can't say
why it isn't working for you, but for me, it rocks!
