error in sound

Hi
   After installing ubuntu 7.10 .When i try to play any mp3 song,it start
downloading a sound codecs,but while installing a error comes "*conflict
with another sound package*".  Does any body knws this error`s
solution.Andmy next ques also relates to sound,I installed ubuntu
7.3 on my ACER laptop,It has ATI drivers error.No sound plays,tell me the
solutions guys and gals.
