Yes, all hard disks are block devices. But the error message said, it is
not a VALID block device. I.e. for some reason the system no longer knows
about sda5. What is the output of "mount" alone? Maybe you replugged the
external USB disk and now it has a different device name.
One more thing: In a previous mail you wrote, that you could only mount
your NTFS hard disk read only. Now, what file system is your external USB
disk? If it is also NTFS, you can probably not mount it read/write as the
live CD you are using has no write support for NTFS.
