i had this problem, removing any "vga=" lines in /boot/grub/menu.lst
fixed it for me.
remove it from both the "defoptions" section and from each kernel line
where you see it and see if it works.
you can also just boot to the grub menu and edit the line manually to
test it out before committing the edit to the menu.lst file.
