hmm... I'm not running the drivers from the nvidia website. I'm using
the nvidia packaged drivers.

I think the effect (which may well have made the difference for you)
is having removed the init script which uses mknod to create nvidia
device nodes.  I think this probably is important for me, however,
since I'm using the packaged drivers.  Also linux-restricted-modules
depends on this package.
