Is there any reason why you need to run pppoe on your system? Were I
you, I would purge pppoe and pppoeconf (sudo apt-get purge pppoe
pppoeconf) and restart your networking (sudo /etc/init.d/networking
restart) and see if: 1) your interface comes up properly, and 2) if you
can then ping ubuntu.com. You can of course reinstall pppoe & pppoeconf
if that doesn't work, however most ADSL modems will provide the
necessary pppoe, so unless you really need to set it on the machine side
I wouldn't mess with it.
