Not true. If I boot with squid starting before X starts X will not
start period. If I disable squid then X works. That is proof that squid
is the problem.

Well that is fine. I have not a single executable file changed or
removed in this computer. But I do use the Nvidia software in the kernel
and it appears that squid does a number on it.
