Getting Skype webcam working

    As root I can look for /dev/video* and I see nothing with my webcam 
plugged in. Here is what I did:

root at karl-desktop:~# ls -al /dev/vid*
ls: /dev/vid*: No such file or directory
root at karl-desktop:~#
So it is not working period.
