Hi there, good morning from stateside.

What kind of soundcard do you have?

Give a quick check of your speaker wires, be sure they are plugged in and no
wires are loose.

At a command prompt, type 'gnome-alsamixer' and check out the settings
there.

I have a Soundblaster and was having the same problem you're describing.  It
took me a long time to figure out that 'SB Live Analog/Digital Output Jack'
needed to be unchecked.
