You can get a DVD reader/burner these days for less than $50 most
places in the US, and that's probably going to be cheaper than a
capture card. And a capture card will be more complicated to operate
and get working in ubuntu than a dvd drive.

One thing you need to play most commercial dvds is libdvdcss2, and if
you haven't installed that, you should.
