Cannot play DVD's

Hi everyone:

I have a bit of a problem. I am using Ubuntu 8.04 on a Dell Inspiron 
1525 laptop (Gnome desktop). I cannot play any dvd's in any dvd or movie 
players and I have downloaded every one of them using Synaptic. I have 
also tried running each and everyone of them to see if they will play 
dvd's and not a one works. It's as if it is not recognizing my cdrom 
drive. Does that mean it is not mounted? If so how can I fix this 
permanently? Thank you all.
