how to disable pulseaudio

Yes, I am going to try do that on one of the machines. But I was
surprised that I cannot use the console level controls (alsamixer)
anymore if I used puselaudio. My last post was just to describe that
alsamixer does work while pulseaudio is running but the card number
needs to be specified.
