That's really not the same thing.  From Day 1, Python versions were 
never intended to be backwards compatible.  Perl has finally decided that 
they need a major update that won't be - but they still haven't 
philosophically decided that that is the future of the language, and it 
took them 6 major versions to reach this point.

Python doesn't even promise compatibility between _minor_ versions.  
What Python has demonstrated very well is that version-compatibility 
isn't nearly as important as people always thought.
