I have to disagree with you on this one if I understand the usage of
"basic" here correctly. I would say /most/ of the maintenance can be
done remotely via a shell. The only thing that cannot be done is the
configuration of look and feel where visual feedback is desired. Using
vnc, even that is hardly difficult.
For now, if I can find a way to login a user via the gdm but from a
shell prompt, I would not even need a user at the remote machine to help
me do anything at all!

I recall having do go through something similar in RedHat 7, 8, 9 days.
Then I discovered Debian and dpkg and apt. Debian had such a robust
packaging system that I completely switched and have never looked back.
It had nothing like the rpm-hell in RH. No wonder Ubuntu chose Debain! ;)
