I was at one of their recycle events back in March of this year, and
along with a bunch of volunteers we got Ubuntu installed on a few
hundred donated systems. So they are very much about putting free
software on the machines.
It was hosted at Untangle in San Mateo along with a number of other
partner sites that same day. (Andrew Fife of Untangle is president of
our local silicon Valley LUG too).
