That script is a diagnostic tool.  Tonight at UDS (Jaunty), in fact, 
over dinner and informally, members of the Canonical support team and I 
discussed how to automate this process (gathering codec data and doing 
meaningful things with them, like utilising alsa-info.sh and 
speaker-test to test for a sane set of defaults, like audible front and 
surround speaker playback/outputs and microphone capture/inputs).

There will be a GUI for it.  Integrating it into GNOME/KDE/Xfce/etc. is 
a point of discussion.
