To summarize, I moved the wifi(GWM) to the router, hooked it up, and booted with these results:
1. Stayed in wireless mode and couldn't connect to 192.168.1.254, the 2wire configuration setup page as expected.
2. Wired the GWM into the router without changing anything(did not disable wifi) and still could not connect to 192.168.1.254.
3. Disabled wifi via nm; unticked the wireless entry(maybe rebooted; don't remember) and was able to connect.
Sorry, don't remember if I rebooted in step2 and will have to try that again if step 2 would work with both cards active. Was a long day-:))
4. I still have intermittent lost connections even now and I have to do a ifdown, ifup to reconnect. This is with wired connection and wifi disabled. Nice to get that fixed-:))
sudo ifconfig eth0 restart or sudo /etc/init.d/network restart wont restart the connection. Output on ifconfig eth0 restart is interface not found. The options used may be wrong as I didn't check the man.
5. Have done things NoOp requested just to see results and post it. See

Not really even after reading all the responses. I only saw the IP's I usually see for the static setup and maybe that is telling I connected to 2wire. But it's not clear to me.

Always on Gutsy machine using Ubuntu with no Windows installed on it.

All as you say above before changing to wired connection and disabling wifi.

Have done that now and get the same old, 192.168.1.64 DHCP number. 2wire config page now shows another ubuntu entry for DHCP. the wifi entry is disabled. It's happening again, my browser window starts jumping around stops and I can't type. Subject for another post. The IP shown here is not in the range you listed below which was the confusing I mentioned on a separate response. Now, I can see what I'm typing as I type and above I had to wait several seconds to see it. Hope it doesn't confuse you. I don't know what is causing it.

DHCP Range: 192.168.1.64 - 192.168.1.253 which is why what you
said confused me.
This solves the gateway ping/connect via firefox issue. Will have to wait until about Dec. 28 to get the other maching back and switch back to static IP's and check pinging between machines again. Then maybe some questions about NFS. Thanks for everyones help. Most appreciated.
