Menu will not drop down

Hello,

Well, it happened again, when I started up today I could not get the
upper panel with the menus on it to drop down out of hiding so I could
use it. This happens in the newest kernel for Hardy.

I also could not get ALT-F2 to bring up the run box, which works
normally. I had to do a CTRL-ALT-DEL to get the shutdown dialog, and
after clicking the Shutdown button on there it never shut down. I had to
hard power down.

I did notice this time after holding in the power button that there were
messages logging to the screen as my computer shut down, and here's a
clue... they appeared to be start up scripts still running. The first
message at the top was about starting alsa and I didn't catch the rest
of them.

I've restarted into the next kernel back from the newest one, and would
like to know if there are any trouble shooting steps I can take to see
what is hanging me up in the new kernel? I just thought of one thing,
look at the logs!

Here are some entries from my user.log for today. They appear to be
error messages, but I do not understand them very well.

Dec 6 14:12:19 ray-desktop dhcdbd: Started up.

Dec 6 14:17:39 ray-desktop gnome-power-manager: (ray) Shutting down
computer. Reason: The power button has been pressed.

Here are a couple of messages from the Messages section of log viewer
which appear to be errors for that boot.

Here is the section of daemon.log for that boot up. I don't know what
or who the user "avahi" is, and wasn't previously aware that any
"server" was running on my machine. Is this a normal thing?

Here are a couple of interesting entries from auth.log It seems my user
failed authentication on that boot, and no similar failure messages
appear for the next boot up. Is there a problem here?

Dec 6 14:12:30 ray-desktop gdm[5889]: pam_unix(gdm-autologin:session):

Dec 6 14:12:40 ray-desktop sudo: pam_unix(sudo:auth): authentication
failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty= ruser= rhost= user=ray

This last entry from syslog isn't relevant to the last boot but brings
up a new question. I have awstats installed so I can analyze my server
logs from my hosting service, but haven't figured out how to use it yet.
It seems to be doing the following cron job every ten minutes. Anyone
know what it's doing?

Dec 6 15:30:01 ray-desktop /USR/SBIN/CRON[7767]: (www-data) CMD ([ -x
/usr/lib/cgi-bin/awstats.pl -a -f /etc/awstats/awstats.conf -a -r
/var/log/apache/access.log ] && /usr/lib/cgi-bin/awstats.pl
-config=awstats -update >/dev/null)

Thanks for any help you can be. Later, Ray Parrish
