Transfer speed between machines on LAN

Check out this article [1].  In short it shows how to test the bandwidth 
between two machines.  This will make sure that the problem is truly 
with ethernet bandwidth and not with disk io or something else.  You 
might also install both nic cards in the desktop and try to test from 
card a to card b.  I think it will send the signal out through the 
router but the network always seems to out smart me.
