In fact this has happened to me ca. 2 weeks ago on Intrepid. My Inbox
now shows 28 unread messages, but when I click it it display nothing at
all - not even the "this folder is empty" message that empty folders
show.

There is a bug report open on Launchpad, with a few duplicates, which
describes very similar behavior. However, in this case only Exchange
email is affected, and the given workarounds therefor do not help. I
have not gotten around to add to that, and frankly am at a loss as to
what exactly to add - I have just as little info as the OP.

I helped myself for now by creating mail filter that simply forwards
all incoming mail to a new folder. It is visible there.
When I find the time I will take this as a final cue to set up an IMAP
server with dovecot and feed it the mail from my accounts via getmail. I
had such a setup years ago and it is a much better idea, but I lost it
somehow along the way and figure that I don't really need it. I was
wrong.
