Configuring Ardour and JACK

I'm new to Ubuntu; running 8.10. I'd like to give Ardour a try, but when I
start it up, I get the following message:

==========
Ardour could not start JACK

There are several possible reasons:

1) You requested audio parameters that are not supported..
2) JACK is running as another user.

Please consider the possibilities, and perhaps try different parameters.
==========

I'm not really sure what to do about this; I looked around in JACK, but
didn't really know what to look for. I'm assuming the default audio driver
isn't correct; am I right? I have noticed that the highest volume is
significantly lower in Ubuntu than the highest in Vista (I'm dual-booting).
If someone could point me in the right direction, I'd be grateful!

TIA,
Andrew

PS : BTW, why can't I have more than one package manager working at once?
