No Gnome menu, cannot move applications.

Maybe. My _guess_ would be that you _may_ have an older intel video
chipset.

I just ran into this on a machine with an 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE
Chipset Integrated Graphics Device and it does just this. I ended up
blowing out 8.10 and installed 8.04 (hardy instead). Afterwards, I went
looking to find out why and found that there is a conflict between the
chipset and compiz. Oddly enough, compiz runs 'out-of-the-box' using
hardy on the same machine.

Give this a try first:

If not, then use Ctrl-Alt-F1 and login. Then:

sudo apt-get remove compiz compiz-core

Ugly, but supposedly it works. For me I'll just stick to hardy on that
machine.
